The northern Renaissance

Five and a half centuries ago in the Netherlands, artists were learning for the first time that a painted image on a flat surface could actually be made a mirror of reality; and in part this achievement was made possible through an exciting discovery - oil painting. The Northern Renaissance painter minutely examined every aspect of his expanding world. He scrutinized its surface; he also peered beneath, searching for a significance deeper than what is visible. It was a search for the truth, and the Northern Renaissance rooms in The National Gallery, London, document the many stages of that search. The work of the following is featured: Jan Van Eyck, Robert Campin, Dirk Bouts, Gerard David, Jan Provoost, Geertgen, Hans Memlinc, Rogier van der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Marinus, Lucas Cranach, Jan Gossaert, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein.
