The Edge of the World offers a very original view of the intriguing Australian writer Tim Winton. After winning the Vogel Award at the age of 21 for "An Open Swimmer " he went on to win the prestigious Miles Franklin Award for "Shallows" two years later. At age 32, he won both the Deo Gloria Award and a further Miles Franklin Award for his novel "Cloudstreet". In 1995 "The Riders" which was short listed for the Booker Prize and a feature film of his novel "In the Winter Dark" has been made starring the Oscar-nominated British actress Brenda Blethyn. This film includes illuminating interviews with Winton about his work, his influences, and what drives him. He is interested in the way random tragedies beset people, and often draws on events from his childhood as the basis of his works. In The Edge of the World he is seen researching a new novel, giving the viewer an intriguing insight into a writer at work. The Edge of the World was shot in both Australia and Canada. It includes stunning locations, most notably of the magnificent coast and hinterland of Australia's north-west. The film captures Tim Winton speaking about his great loves: his family, his work, the sea and fishing, and the many characters of the remote northern coast of Western Australia who have inspired his writing.
