2023
Computer Files, Websites
Throughout the 80’s and 90’s Japan was a global force in video games, with mega hits in the gaming arcades such as Pac Man, before dominating the console market through Nintendo and Sega with iconic games such as Mario and Sonic. By 1995, Japan controlled 80% of the global console market and 50% of the global video game market. However, today Japan controls just 10% of the global video game market, with stiff competition arising in the form of eSports and mobile gaming, as well as regional competition from Korea and China which has re-shaped the gaming universe. But Japan is not taking things lying down. With new developments in the past few years including the highly popular Nintendo Switch, and new gaming favourites such as Animal Crossing, Japan is making a strong comeback. Featuring gaming experts and enthusiasts from around the world, as well as cutting-edge graphics and diverse gaming footage, we explore the incredible rise and fall of Japan's gaming industry, as well as the road to its promising return.
